NAACP Reno-Sparks Branch No. 1112 Meeting Highlights

Dear Friends and Fellow Members:

The July 13 monthly meeting of NAACP Reno-Sparks Branch No. 1112 was both more deadly and more lively than usual.

Regarding the former, since Elder Moon could be with us only in spirit, in lieu of an invocation, I read the names of the seven we have recently lost and asked for a moment of silence to remember them. The departed include former Branch Presidents Eddie B. Scott and William N. Moon; former Branch stalwarts Mary Johnson, Alberta Rederford and Georgetta Seals; Ernest W. Mack, brother of Executive Committee Member Bertha Mullins; and Jordan Keith Buggs, 21, son of Genevieve (Jenny) Martinez-Buggs. She is starting a baseball scholarship fund in the young man's name.

Lonnie Feemster noted that the names of the deceased Branch members will be entered into the record at the upcoming NAACP National Convention. Let's hope we can take a break from memorial services for a little while.

Regarding the lively and informative, our honored guest was State Sen. Julia Ratti, D-Sparks, who not only updated us on the recently concluded 2017 legislative session but handled some tough questions from the assembled multitudes. She is also going to follow thru with those who asked for more information about some items.

Her insight ran pretty much the full gamut of the high profile legislative issues which made the news and several which did not. We thank her for her attendance and hope to see her again soon.

I chaired the meeting because President Patricia Gallimore is still recovering from successful thyroid surgery. Nonetheless, she attended and spoke several times despite her doctor's orders echoed from the chair to please keep silent and get well. Patricia is very motivated. She and Second VP Don Gallimore, Sr., as well as four-time Past-President Lonnie Feemster, will attend the NAACP national convention in Baltimore later this month.

Our guest speaker at our August 10 meeting will be Washoe County Public Defender Christine Brady who will further inform us about the nuances of new marijuana laws. We learned about some of the complexities from Sen. Ratti but much remains unresolved in law, regulation and actual practice.

I apologize for not e-mailing notice of Sen. Ratti's attendance, as we did not get confirmation in time. I was able to post a notice at but was otherwise a bit busy yesterday. (See below and please consider acting accordingly.)

When I brought up the current public transportation issues noted hereinbelow in my political action report, I was informed by a Branch member of some additional glaring inadequacies for senior citizens and the disabled. Stay tuned.

Thanks for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you next month.
